Big Gay Al talks to Stan and makes him realise that homosexuality is ok.
Stan’s dog Sparky turns out to be gay – or, a “gay homosexual” as Cartman eloquently puts it – and runs away to an animal sanctuary run by the titular Al, he of gaudy Hawaiian shirt and curled lip. But by the fourth episode the animation was hitting its stride in mixing the puerile with the profound. It didn’t take long for South Park to establish its riotous indifference towards causing offence: the very first episode was called Cartman Gets an Anal Probe. And then have someone fart or sing a song about “boneration”. South Park has survived presidents, and Netflix owes much to the talent of American writers Trey Parker and Matt Stone, who always located something thought-provoking among the surreal, gross-out cartoon madness of the world they created. Over the course of 277 episodes, the adult cartoon centred around the escapades of four childhood friends and their Colorado townfolk has established itself as a television great: always current, often prescient witheringly satirical and blisteringly funny.
Twenty years have passed since South Park first appeared on our screens.
